Memories of Growing up in Newfoundland

Candice Walsh over on MatadorNetwork.com has an interesting take on 11 Memories You Have Growing Up in Newfoundland.  After reading through her list I came to the conclusion that while we did share some similar memories, life growing up “around the bay” was definitely different than life growing up in Mt. Pearl.

I was a bit of a hybrid as my family were from outside of the St. John’s/Mt. Pearl area, so I shared the same type of large extended family that Candice references but I can safely say at no point in my life did I ever drive my truck across a frozen bay.

One particular item that really stood out to me was:

7. Having to rinse our mouths with fluoride in the mornings at school

This is the first I’ve ever heard of this.  Was this a common occurrence in school’s other than mine?

Candice was spot on with the last item on her list though.

11. Not actually appreciating Newfoundland until much, much later

While I always loved the province, I really started to realize how much the province meant to me and how much I missed it when I was away from it.  While I’m still not a dedicated Jiggs and Reels listener on Sunday morning, I’ve even developed a fondness for some Irish/Newfoundland songs.

Do you think some memories could be added Candice’s list?  Let us know in the comments!
