Iceberg Break-up Causes Big Waves in King’s Point

Jason Griffiths was standing on his parent’s deck in King’s Point on Tuesday recording video on a big iceberg that settled into the harbour when he captured some rare footage of an iceberg rolling over.

The initial sound of the crack of the ice was enough to scare his mother into exclaiming “Oh my glory!, WOW”, but what came next was even more exciting. The huge pieces of ice fell into the water below generating some massive waves that raced towards the beach below. Fearing his wife may be on the beach below Jason can be heard yelling “Get off the beach!”. Luckily no one was hurt and Jason was left with some footage that has been shared around the world.

As more Newfoundlanders and tourist to the province are recording their iceberg sightseeing, videos of icebergs collapsing are surfacing a little more frequently. Nevertheless, they are still awe inspiring to see. The most impressive video to date of an iceberg collapsing off the coast of Newfoundland remains the one below taken by Rick and Wanda Stead in June of 2014.

Warning: Turn down the volume before hitting play. “RUN RICK! GOOOO!!!” – you’ll thank me (and understand) when you watch it!
