Big 3 Stories

Crocker Elected in Trinity-Bay de Verde

Liberal Steve Crocker was elected as the new MHA for Trinity-Bay de Verde last night in convincing fashion.  Crocker received 3074.  Ron Johnson, the father of former MHA for the district Charlene Johnson and PC candidate, received 1363 votes while Tolson Rendell finished in third with 254 votes.  The convincing win seemed to come as a surprise to the Johnson campaign as a clearly frustrated Charlene Johnson told reporters that based on conversation with people in the area that they would have around 2100 votes but conceeding that they must have driven a lot of Liberal supporters to the polls.

Flynn Completes Liberal By-Election Sweep in Humber East

Stelman Flynn completed the Liberal by-election sweep by being elected in the district of Humber East. This was another election that wasn’t terribly close with Flynn picking up 2263 votes with PC candidate Lary Wells gaining 1434 votes and NDP candidate Martin Ware picked up 315 votes.  Flynn’s win marked the 7 straight by-election win for the Liberals.  Losing the Humber East seat is a deep blow to the Tory’s as that seat was occupied by former Premier Tom Marshall before leaving politics earlier this year.

Tories in Trouble

Although the writing is clearly on the wall that the Liberals are gaining major momentum if not too far out in front to be caught, some Tories put a positive spin on things.  Although Premier Paul Davis was quiet last night, deputy Premier Steve Kent was active on Twitter.  Among his comments were that the party had big plans for the province which was optimistic considering it doesn’t appear that they’ll survive the next election given the rate they’re losing seats in the by-elections.  Former finance minister Charlene Johnson put it more bluntly calling it a “slaughtering.”
