Big 3 Stories

Gander Goalie Rushes into Stands to Help Save a Life

The biggest story in the province yesterday also got quite a bit of attention around North America.  Gander Flyers goalie Patrick O’Brien was in the locker room getting dressed for their game against the Corner Brook Royals when an assistant coach rushed in to get him to assist a man who appeared to have had a heart attack, knowing that Patrick was a paramedic.  O’Brien rushed to the man in the stands, half dressed in his hockey gear and aided former EMTs Claude Elliott (also the mayor of Gander) and Tom Whalen perform CPR.  They continued resuscitation efforts until on-duty paramedics arrived.

The story was picked up by a number of national news and sports outlets, as well as several American sports networks.

Call for Ban on Selling E-Cigs to Minors

I’m going to file this under “what the *#&$”?  I had no idea that it was currently legal for a minor to purchase e-cigarettes in the province.  The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils urged the provincial government on Monday to follow in the footsteps on the Ontario government and restrict their sale to people over the age of 19.  Ontario has been making a move towards treating e-cigarettes like real cigarettes.

Dodge Ram Crashes through Wing’N It Window

CBC has some crazy video posted of store front footage of Wing’N It in Clarenville as a Dodge Ram comes crashing through the front window.  Luckily there were only a handful of people in the restaurant and none in the path of the accident.  None of the customers were hurt in the incident and the driver felt so sheepish about the accident that he bought wings for the customers in the restaurant at the time.
