Unique View of Signal Hill from a Drone

Signal Hill is one of the most famous landmarks in St. John’s and provides one of the most stunning views overlooking the city provided you’re up there on a clear day.  But while browsing YouTube I came across a completely different vantage point of the landmark.

User ‘chingascook62’ posted a video back in July of this year of the view from his Phantom 2 drone (equipped with a GoPro camera) flying over Signal Hill and looking out over the city.  The video was shot on a beautiful sunny day in the city and the results are spectacular.

The view that the drone provides is typically only available when arriving via plane to St. John’s International Airport.  It’s also this fact that started an argument in the comments below the video on YouTube (I know, I know – it’s hard to believe an argument broke out on the YouTube comments).  Apparently the area over Signal Hill is actually restricted airspace due to the fact that it’s on the approach path for planes arriving at the airport.  According some of the commenters it’s a major no-no with Transport Canada to fly drones in this area which would explain why there are so few views like this.

While the pilot of the drone may have been in the wrong for flying in the area, there’s no denying that the video he captured is breathtaking.
